Ohio Geological Society Honorary Member - Frederick R. Haeberle (1919-2015)

The past few years, I've been writing biographies of geologists who have been awarded Honorary Membership by the Ohio Geological Society. Because of various website reorganizations, these biographies were never republished to the website or never released on the website (https://www.ohiogeosoc.org/). I thought I would release these biographies through my blog, in order to help recognise the important work that these geologists had done in Ohio.

Ohio Geological Society Honorary Member

Frederick R. Haeberle (1919-2015)

By James McDonald

Frederick R. Haeberle was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Oct. 6, 1919, the son of Rear Admiral and Mrs. Frederick E. Haeberle. As the son of a naval officer, he grew up in various naval communities across the country. He began to attend Yale University in the late 1930s, but his education was interrupted by World War II. He spent more than 5 years in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific. He served his country on Guadalcanal, New Georgia and New Caledonia, moving from Private to Second Lieutenant. Fred was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the Pre-Pearl Harbor Medal, the Pacific Theatre Medal with 3 battlestars, the Victory Medal, and the Naval Presidential Unit Citation for the Americal Division. He was also inducted as an Honorary Member of the Free French Forces.

After his military service, he finished college, graduating from Yale University with a B.S. in Geology in 1947, an M.S. in Geology in 1948, and then later his MBA degree in Finance from Columbia University in 1962.

Fred began his career as a Geologist with the Standard Oil Co of Texas (Chevron) from 1948-1952. He then moved onto a series of positions in Abilene Texas: Chief Geologist of the JJ Lynn Oil Division from 1952-1953, Division Manager of Mayfair Minerals from 1953-1954, and finally a Consulting Geologist from 1954-1957. Fred then moved overseas to work as a Log Analyst with the Venezuelan Atlantic Refining Company, Caracas, Venezuela from 1957-1960. He came back to the United States to take a position with Mobil Oil Company as a Senior Geologist from 1962-1983. Fred traveled the world with the Mobil Oil Company, working in Philippines, New York City, Tripoli-Libya, and Dallas Texas. He finally left Mobil Oil in 1983 and again became a Consulting Geologist in Dallas from 1983 to 1998.

During the time of his career as a Geologist, Fred worked in several different academic positions. He was a part-time Instructor of Geology at the University of Houston from 1948-1950. Fred also was Adjunct Professor at McMurray University, Abilene Texas, from 1954-1957. While at McMurray University, he helped start the Geology Department

In semi-retirement, he and his wife moved to Delaware Ohio to be closer to family. Even though he had moved to Delaware, Ohio, he was active as a consultant, researcher, and writer. He authored many articles for the Oil & Gas Journal and made a number of presentations at the Eastern Section AAPG Annual Meetings.

Fred was a member of the Rotary Club of Dallas, Texas and Delaware, Ohio. He published 49 technical papers and abstracts in various oil & gas journals, and while in his 90s wrote 3 books — "You, Oil and Gasoline" (2010), "Three Parts of My Life" (2011) and "Flying Boat Charlie" (2014). Fred was elected Fellow of the Geological Society of America in 1948 and was a 50-year member of AAPG. On May 15, 2009, Fred was awarded Honorary Membership by the Ohio Geological Society for his service to the profession and his research during his career.
