Ohio Geological Society Honorary Member - D.D. “Bud” Kock

The past few years, I've been writing biographies of geologists who have been awarded Honorary Membership by the Ohio Geological Society. Because of various website reorganizations, these biographies were never republished to the website or never released on the website (https://www.ohiogeosoc.org/). I thought I would release these biographies through my blog, in order to help recognise the important work that these geologists had done in Ohio.

D.D. “Bud” Kock is a consultant and Internal ISO Auditor for Ergon, Inc. Bud has been working in the petroleum industry for over 50 years. He began his career at the Sterling Oil Division of Quaker State Refining Corporation in 1965. Bud started off as a Sales Representative in the western part of Pennsylvania, covering covered areas from Erie, Pennsylvania to Butler, Pennsylvanian. In 1969, he was moved to Cambridge, Ohio as the Branch Manager. Then in 1974, he was promoted to Assistant District Manager of the St. Marys, WV division. Eventually, he was promoted to District Manager. The Assistant District Manager and the Sales Manager positions included the West Virginia and Ohio area. Responsibilities during this time included supervising several salesmen and sales branches. There were nine offices, four warehouses and nineteen full time drivers delivering motor oil and finish light ends.

In 1984, Bud moved onto a position of Crude Oil Procurement and Manager of Corporate Crude Supply for Pennzoil Quaker State Company in St. Marys, WV and Oil City, PA. His responsibilities as a crude oil buyer include all aspects of purchasing Pennsylvania Crude from independent producers and working with crude brokers that purchased and resold crude oil in the Appalachian Basin. The corporate manager position supervised two oil buyers and the division order department and making sure the refineries were supplied with crude. Other duties were trading selling or trading crude with other major refining identities to sell or trade excess.

Bud moved onto being Vice President and General Manager of Crude Supply with Ergon Oil Purchasing, Inc. in 1997. He was responsible for covering all aspects of supplying crude to the Newell, West Virginia plant. This included purchasing crude from independent producers, and brokers. The position required scheduling crude into the refinery and when needed, selling excess crude to other major refineries. The scheduling of crude oil included barge, pipeline and trucking movements. While working at Newell, an internal auditing job became available and he added the position of being a quality management ISO lead auditor, traveling to several of the Ergon, Inc. companies.

He retired from Ergon in November 2005 but continues to work part time as an ISO lead auditor. Bud has been conducting internal ISO audits and management training for Ergon, Inc. at their many facilities as a consultant.

While working in these positions, Bud was a member of several state trade organizations in the Appalachian Basin. Bud held a trustee position of the Ohio Oil and Gas Association and was inducted into the Ohio Oil and Gas Association Hall of Fame. Bud has been outstanding supporter of the Ohio Geological Society. Through his association with Ergon Oil Purchasing, Ergon has financially support numerous OGS events, especially the OGS Winter Gala and the Eastern Section AAPG Annual Meetings. Because of his support, the Ohio Geological Society awarded him Honorary Membership in 2005.
