Ohio Geological Society Honorary Member - Jean Gertrude Simmons-Brown (1927-1998)

The past few years, I've been writing biographies of geologists who have been awarded Honorary Membership by the Ohio Geological Society. Because of various website reorganizations, these biographies were never republished to the website or never released on the website (https://www.ohiogeosoc.org/). I thought I would release these biographies through my blog, in order to help recognise the important work that these geologists had done in Ohio.

Jean Gertrude Simmons-Brown (1927-1998)

Jean Gertrude Simmons-Brown was born September 27, 1927 to Fay Bushnall Simmons and Janet G. Simmons (nee Goff) in Cook County, Illinois. She attended the University of Chicago and received a B.S. degree and M.S. degree in Geology in 1950. After graduation, Jean went to work for the Ohio Geological Survey as an Editor. In her position as Editor, she edited many of the publications produced by the Ohio Geological Survey during the 1950s through the mid-1970s. It was during the time of Morrow County oil boom that the Ohio Geological Survey was overwhelmed with public requests for information concerning oil and gas exploration. Jean assisted with the handling of the large number of visitors to the Survey, and the large number of written and phone requests for information and publication sales.

For many years during the 1960s, Jean edited the annual guidebooks for the Ohio Geological Society. In addition, she was the Editing and Registration Chair for the first Eastern Section AAPG Annual Meeting in 1972. Because of her service to the Society as editor and the public assistance she provided during the Morrow County oil boom, Jean was awarded Honorary Membership by the Ohio Geological Society in 1972. Jean Simmons-Brown died on November 17, 1998 in Galloway, Ohio.
