Ohio Geological Society Honorary Member - Jerry C. Olds

The past few years, I've been writing biographies of geologists who have been awarded Honorary Membership by the Ohio Geological Society. Because of various website reorganizations, these biographies were never republished to the website or never released on the website (https://www.ohiogeosoc.org/). I thought I would release these biographies through my blog, in order to help recognise the important work that these geologists had done in Ohio.

Jerry C. Olds

By James McDonald

Jerry C. Olds attended Texas A & M University, receiving a B.S. in Geological Engineering in 1957. After college, he moved with his wife to Layfette, La. Jerry served in the U.S. Army in the late 1950s, then returned to Lafayette as a Geologist with Pan American. In 1960, he was transferred to New Orleans. In 1964, upon hearing about the Morrow County oil boom after his service in the Army, he moved to Ohio and hung up his shingle as a geological consultant in 1964. In 1981, he founded Solid Rock Energy, Inc., a company that produces crude oil and natural gas in Ohio. Jerry and his company continue to be active in exploration and production of oil and gas in Ohio to this day.

Professionally, Jerry has been a member of the Ohio Geological Society (OGS), AAPG, Ohio Oil and Gas Association (OOGA), and SEG. As a member of OOGA, Jerry has served as President of the Ohio Oil and Gas Association, Trustee, and Honorary Trustee. For his service in OOGA, he was inducted into the OOGA Hall of Fame in 2002. On July 27, 2015, he received the prestigious Oilfield Patriot Award from OOGA (https://youtu.be/1KDgwO1pBH4). Jerry has served as Delegate in the AAPG House of Delegates from 1984 through 1987. Finally, Jerry has been a member of the Ohio Geological Society since 1965. He served as an officer of the Ohio Geological Society: Treasurer (1976-1977), Secretary (1977-1978), Vice President (1978-1979), and President (1979-1980). Because of his outstanding leadership within the oil and gas industry, OOGA, and Ohio Geological Society, the Ohio Geological Society awarded him Honorary Membership in 2002.
